Keep Up With What’s Happening on Folly Beach

While there are thousands of instagram-worthy moments on Folly Beach every single day, we can only capture so many. Check out our daily Instagram posts below and make sure to tags us in yours so you can help us share the Folly love.

Sometimes, a big impact starts with a small group and a morning on the beach.

Last month, a group of 29 fifth graders from Mason Prep spent the morning helping care for Folly Beach during a beach sweep. In just a few hours, they collected 427 pieces of debris from the shoreline.

Their cleanup included plastics, cigarette waste, glass, fishing gear, and even a few unexpected finds along the way. Among those items were 62 pieces that are currently banned on Folly Beach, including plastic bags, Styrofoam, glass bottles, plastic utensils, and smoking-related materials.

The results offer an important reminder of how quickly litter can accumulate along the coast. They also show how much of a difference a small group of people can make when they come together to help protect a place they care about.

We are grateful to these students for their effort and for setting such a strong example for our community. 🌊

If you are interested in joining a future beach sweep or learning more about getting involved, you can find more information in the Facebook Group "Toby Turtle."

Each spring, Folly Beach quietly welcomes one of the most remarkable visitors on the coast. 🐢

Loggerhead sea turtle nesting season starts May 1, and each year these incredible animals return to our shoreline to lay their eggs.

From May 1 through October 31, Folly follows a simple rule to help protect them.

Lights Out on the beach after sunset.

Loggerhead hatchlings instinctively move toward the brightest light, which should be the moon reflecting over the ocean. Artificial lights from homes, flashlights, or cameras can confuse them and lead them away from the water.

A few simple actions can make a big difference:
🌙 Keep beach lights off between sundown and sunrise
📸 Avoid flash photography or shining lights on turtles
🏖️ Fill in large holes dug in the sand before leaving the beach
🐕 Keep dogs away from marked nests

If you happen to see a nesting turtle or hatchlings, please observe from a distance and report sightings to 843-588-2433.

Folly Beach is fortunate to be part of the nesting grounds for these beloved animals, and protecting them is a responsibility our community takes seriously.

#FollyBusinessSpotlight - Pet Helpers 🐾

Some of the most meaningful work happening in our community is done quietly, one animal at a time.

Just a short drive from Folly Beach on Folly Road, Pet Helpers has spent decades helping animals find safety, care, and loving homes. Since 1978, Pet Helpers has been Charleston’s first no-kill animal shelter, providing a safe place for thousands of animals while working to connect them with families across the Lowcountry.

In addition to adoption programs, Pet Helpers operates a low-cost veterinary clinic, helping make essential care more accessible for pet owners throughout the community.

Their team’s work supports animals at every stage. From rescue and rehabilitation to adoption and education, Pet Helpers is dedicated to improving the lives of animals while strengthening the bond between pets and the people who care for them.

It is the kind of compassion that helps make our community stronger. 🐾

A Sunday well spent on Folly. 🌊

Morning light on the pier. Barefoot walks along the sand. The kind of peaceful start to the day that reminds you why people fall in love with this island.

Easy, breezy, and just the way Sundays should feel.
