The Porgy House

The “Porgy House” on Folly Beach, South Carolina, is a historic home closely tied to the creation of George Gershwin’s renowned opera Porgy and Bess. The house, built in 1933, was originally the summer retreat of author DuBose Heyward and his wife, Dorothy. Gershwin stayed there during the summer of 1934 while collaborating with Heyward on the opera, which was based on Heyward’s novel Porgy. Gershwin drew inspiration from the Gullah culture of the Lowcountry during this time.

The Porgy House is located at 712 West Ashley Avenue and features its original wood interiors, a two-story design with three bedrooms, and a writer’s booth where the Heywards and Gershwin worked. It has been preserved with care and is recognized as a unique cultural landmark.

Today, the Porgy House is a quiet reminder of Folly’s artistic legacy, embodying the spirit of storytelling that has shaped much of the Lowcountry’s rich history. While it may not boast grand architecture, its significance lies in the stories it helped inspire, making it a meaningful stop for those interested in Charleston’s literary and cultural roots.

Peaceful & Beautiful

This was my families first time at the ocean and I will never forget the look of joy on my youngest daughter’s face the moment the waves first came up on her feet. The beach was not over crowded, was clean, and was great for relaxing, swimming, and collecting seashells. There is a long pier for fishing off of and it is a beautiful sight at night. The town atmosphere was a nice mix between relaxing and having a good time and can work for the over 21 crowd as well as for families with small kids. There are plenty of great food stops and cute shops.

Fantastic & Peaceful

This beach is very relaxing and a great place to chill out. We saw several dolphins and enjoyed walking on the fishing pier. I would consider staying on the beach here next time we are in Charleston instead of downtown.
