The Washout

The Washout, a renowned surfing spot on Folly Beach, South Carolina, is celebrated for its consistent, high-quality waves, making it one of the best surf destinations along the East Coast. This area earned its name after Hurricane Hugo in 1989 reshaped the landscape, clearing the beachfront of homes and obstructions and creating ideal conditions for surfable waves. The open winds across the land and water contribute to its excellent surf breaks, with waves typically larger and more powerful than other parts of the island.

Surfers of all levels frequent The Washout, though due to the more challenging conditions, it is particularly popular among intermediate and advanced surfers. The break works best during mid- to high tide and under north or northwest winds. While it’s a hotspot for surfers, beginners may find gentler waves and fewer crowds further up the beach, closer to the pier.

Although a favorite destination, hazards like rip currents and occasional wildlife encounters require awareness and caution. The vibrant surf culture in Folly Beach adds to the appeal, offering a welcoming community atmosphere alongside this excellent surf spot

Beyond the waves, The Washout offers a scenic escape for those who simply want to watch the surfers or enjoy the ocean breeze. Whether you’re riding the waves or soaking in the coastal beauty, The Washout is a perfect spot to experience Folly Beach’s adventurous spirit.

Peaceful & Beautiful

This was my families first time at the ocean and I will never forget the look of joy on my youngest daughter’s face the moment the waves first came up on her feet. The beach was not over crowded, was clean, and was great for relaxing, swimming, and collecting seashells. There is a long pier for fishing off of and it is a beautiful sight at night. The town atmosphere was a nice mix between relaxing and having a good time and can work for the over 21 crowd as well as for families with small kids. There are plenty of great food stops and cute shops.

Fantastic & Peaceful

This beach is very relaxing and a great place to chill out. We saw several dolphins and enjoyed walking on the fishing pier. I would consider staying on the beach here next time we are in Charleston instead of downtown.
