The Fishing Pier

The Folly Beach Fishing Pier has a rich history that spans several decades. It offers excellent fishing opportunities and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, and it remains a beloved spot for locals and tourists alike.

Early Beginnings

The original Folly Beach Fishing Pier was constructed in 1931 by the City of Charleston. It was initially built to serve as a place for both fishing and recreational activities, offering a scenic way for people to enjoy the beach and the ocean.

During the Big Band Era of the 1930s-1940s, live music performances drew large crowds to the area as the Pier became a significant venue for seeing some of the greats, including Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie.

Hurricane Damage and Rebuild

Over the years, the pier suffered significant damage due to hurricanes and storms, which is not uncommon for structures along the South Carolina coast. The most notable damage occurred after Hurricane Gracie in 1959, which severely affected the pier’s structure.

After this storm, the pier was rebuilt in 1960. However, it wasn’t long before Hurricane Hugo in 1989 caused further destruction to the pier. This massive hurricane demolished the pier, leaving only remnants of the structure behind.

Modern Rebuild and Reopening

Following Hurricane Hugo’s devastation, the city once again decided to rebuild the island’s centerpiece. In 1995, the current Folly Beach Fishing Pier was completed. This new structure was designed to withstand the challenges posed by the ocean’s forces and better accommodate the growing number of visitors to the area.

The new pier was designed to be 1,045 feet (319 meters) long, making it one of the longest piers on the East Coast of the United States.

Most recently, The Folly Beach Pier underwent a significant restoration that concluded in late 2022, and the new pier officially reopened to the public in January 2023. The project, which started in October 2020, involved replacing the aging wooden structure with a more durable concrete pier expected to last over 65 years. The new pier maintains its iconic length and includes features like widened fishing areas, shade structures, benches, and a large platform at the end for events and gatherings

Peaceful & Beautiful

This was my families first time at the ocean and I will never forget the look of joy on my youngest daughter’s face the moment the waves first came up on her feet. The beach was not over crowded, was clean, and was great for relaxing, swimming, and collecting seashells. There is a long pier for fishing off of and it is a beautiful sight at night. The town atmosphere was a nice mix between relaxing and having a good time and can work for the over 21 crowd as well as for families with small kids. There are plenty of great food stops and cute shops.

Fantastic & Peaceful

This beach is very relaxing and a great place to chill out. We saw several dolphins and enjoyed walking on the fishing pier. I would consider staying on the beach here next time we are in Charleston instead of downtown.
