September 4th is National Wildlife Day but we are celebrating our true Folly locals all month long. Folly Beach is home to several types of wildlife including the Bottlenose Dolphin, Loggerhead Sea Turtles, Leatherback Sea Turtles, a variety of Crabs, Birds and more. Our Sea Turtles are particularly special to Folly Beach due to the fact that we get to see thousands hatch every year. This year, over forty sea turtle nests have hatched so far on Folly Beach, producing over 4,000 hatchlings. Because hatching will continue through mid-September, it is important to keep your front facing beach house lights out until all hatchlings have left the beach. Eco-friendly Initiatives to keep the ocean clean and free of plastic has greatly impacted our beloved wildlife. Last month, Charleston Surf Rider Foundation collected over 300 straws on Folly Beach in just one hour. The organization is encouraging restaurants and restaurant patrons to “skip the straw and save a sea turtle” in an effort to cut down on plastic pollution that impacts the environment and its wildlife.
