Swimming on Folly

When taking a trip to the “Edge of America”, better known as Folly Beach, there are several very important things to know about Charleston’s favorite beach town.

Folly Beach is located only about 10 miles from downtown Charleston. The beach is public to all, and the beaches of Folly allow swimming at all accesses. Speaking of access, there is access to the beach at the end of every block on the main beach avenue, Ashley Avenue, for almost six miles. Feel free to take a swim, surf a wave, or ride a boogie board anywhere in between! Folly Beach also provides a wheelchair accessible ramp that is located at the beach access on 9th street. There are lifeguards on duty to keep an eye on swimmers at Folly Beach Commercial District (4th St. West to 3rd S. East) and at Folly Beach County Park daily during the summer season.

If you are beaching it with kids, or just want to have a few amenities available at your finger tips, Folly Beach County Park is the best place for you to spend that perfect beach day. This part of the beach is located at the very west end of Folly Beach, and it is definitely the most untouched, and one of the most beautiful parts of Folly. The Park provides a designated swimming area for swimmers, outdoor showers, dressing areas, restrooms, a picnic area, boardwalks and much more. All of those obligatory beach necessities are available to help make your beach day as carefree as possible!

You can find Center Street Beach located on either side of the Folly Beach Fishing Pier. During the summer, this part of the beach is definitely the place to be, making it the busiest part of Folly Beach! Here you will see surfers shredding the waves one after another, so swimmers need to always be on the lookout! It is also important for our beach goers to keep in mind the precautions needed when swimming near the Pier. The Folly Beach Pier is a one thousand foot beauty that juts out into the Atlantic and it is the ideal spot for those fishermen. So, not only do swimmers need to take caution of the dangerous undertow that is found around the Pier, they also need to make sure to stay away from the Pier so that they are not hooked! Other than that, Folly is the finest place to spend those long summer days swimming and soaking up the sun! The water temperatures in the summer range from about 79°F to 84°F, AKA the most desirable ocean temperatures.

Folly Beach truly is the absolute perfect place for your summer beach vacation. Our beach town provides its visitors with everything they could possibly want! From swimming to shopping, to eating and drinking, there is no better place than Folly Beach!

Peaceful & Beautiful

This was my families first time at the ocean and I will never forget the look of joy on my youngest daughter’s face the moment the waves first came up on her feet. The beach was not over crowded, was clean, and was great for relaxing, swimming, and collecting seashells. There is a long pier for fishing off of and it is a beautiful sight at night. The town atmosphere was a nice mix between relaxing and having a good time and can work for the over 21 crowd as well as for families with small kids. There are plenty of great food stops and cute shops.

Fantastic & Peaceful

This beach is very relaxing and a great place to chill out. We saw several dolphins and enjoyed walking on the fishing pier. I would consider staying on the beach here next time we are in Charleston instead of downtown.
