Sea and San Festival

Folly Beach Brings Together Beach Lovers for Over 30 Years With the Annual Sea & Sand Festival

For a small beach town located on the furthest east-most point of the United States, celebrating everything the beach and sea has gifted us is a value shared by locals and visitors alike.

Dating back to the 1990s, the Sea & Sand Festival was created as a way for local businesses to share their gifts with others in a family-friendly way. From the Folly River Park straight to the beach, the Sea & Sand weekend included an artisan street closure event, as well as some healthy competition in the sand. This year, a portion of the proceeds benefitted the Warrior Surf Foundation and Folly Beach Surfers Healing.

During the 31st Annual Sea & Sand Festival this year, Center Street was completely taken over by Folly Beach restaurants, shops, and vendors for a celebration of the laid-back, fun beach town that everyone loves. The street closure event featured local bands across multiple stages, more than 80 Folly art, craft, and fashion vendors, and a surfboard painting contest. There was also a robust kids area complete with the Sea and Sand Circus by Good Clean Fun featuring aerial performers, tall jugglers, face painters, spin art, bubble therapy, sand crafts, inflatables, and more fun for the entire family. The popular rodeo shark was a big hit in its return to take on brave challengers!

Then, on Sunday, February 26th, local beach lovers brought their beach tools and their crafty skills to the Sand Sculpting Competition beachfront at the Tides Hotel. Awards for Best Family, Best Adults, Best Architecture, and Best in Show were given out, along with two honorable mentions, and everyone of all ages had a blast creating their sculptures.

Best Family: Octopus by Michael Chaves

Best Adults: Hippos & Alligator by Tamara Smith

Best Architecture: Squid by David Crosby

Best in Show: Mermaid by Travis Proctor

Honorable Mentions: Shell & Sea Stars and Shark & Man

We want to say a big thank you to everyone far and wide that has joined us for our many Sea & Sand Festivals hosted over the past 31 years. Here’s to another 31 more!

Peaceful & Beautiful

This was my families first time at the ocean and I will never forget the look of joy on my youngest daughter’s face the moment the waves first came up on her feet. The beach was not over crowded, was clean, and was great for relaxing, swimming, and collecting seashells. There is a long pier for fishing off of and it is a beautiful sight at night. The town atmosphere was a nice mix between relaxing and having a good time and can work for the over 21 crowd as well as for families with small kids. There are plenty of great food stops and cute shops.

Fantastic & Peaceful

This beach is very relaxing and a great place to chill out. We saw several dolphins and enjoyed walking on the fishing pier. I would consider staying on the beach here next time we are in Charleston instead of downtown.
