The Heart of Folly Beach Lives in Its Local Businesses

Folly Beach may be known for its laid-back vibe and salty shorelines, but its local businesses are truly the heart of the island. From long-loved eateries to creative boutiques and surf shops, these small businesses shape the community together and keep Folly feeling vibrant, authentic, and wonderful. Whether you’re visiting for the weekend or lucky enough to call the island home, supporting locals is one of the best ways to experience the real Folly Beach.

One standout on the island is Bert’s Market, the 24/7 corner store with a big following. Part grocery store, part deli, part hangout spot, Bert’s is the kind of place you stop by, because why not? It’s more than just a market; it’s a community within the market, always open and always welcoming.

Just a short walk away, Chico Feo offers a completely different flavor of Folly: open-air seating, fresh tacos, cold drinks, and live music almost every night. With its fun decor and welcoming environment, Chico Feo feels like Folly in its purest form. It’s a spot that supports local musicians, hosts creative events, and brings together locals and visitors who want to experience the island’s charm.

For those looking to shop local, Folly’s surf and boutique scene doesn’t disappoint. Shops like McKevlin’s Surf Shop continue to support local surfers and beach lovers with quality items. Meanwhile, small boutiques along Center Street highlight local makers with handmade jewelry, coastal-inspired clothing, and one-of-a-kind gifts.

In the end, Folly Beach’s local businesses are what make this little island feel like home. They’re run by residents who care about community, creativity, and connection. By supporting them, visitors don’t just get great food or unique finds; they get a true taste of Folly’s personality. Whether you are shopping, snacking, and simply soaking in all the good vibes, the island’s small businesses will always leave you feeling a little more local.

Peaceful & Beautiful

This was my families first time at the ocean and I will never forget the look of joy on my youngest daughter’s face the moment the waves first came up on her feet. The beach was not over crowded, was clean, and was great for relaxing, swimming, and collecting seashells. There is a long pier for fishing off of and it is a beautiful sight at night. The town atmosphere was a nice mix between relaxing and having a good time and can work for the over 21 crowd as well as for families with small kids. There are plenty of great food stops and cute shops.

Fantastic & Peaceful

This beach is very relaxing and a great place to chill out. We saw several dolphins and enjoyed walking on the fishing pier. I would consider staying on the beach here next time we are in Charleston instead of downtown.
