A Winter Wonderland on Folly Beach

A Winter Wonderland on Folly Beach

On January 3rd, Folly Beach experienced a shocking snow storm that left our beach town in a total Winter Wonderland!

The storm was the first to hit since 2010 and there have only been two storms since 1970 that created more snow in Charleston than this one. The snow closed businesses, schools, bridges, and even the Charleston International Airport for several days. Weather reports state that up to five inches of snow fell on Folly Beach.

The minute the snow started to fall, parents and children made a run for the beach, and surrounding streets. Folly natives and visitors did not want to miss out on this monumental event. Living in the Lowcountry, most residents do not own sleds. However, the people on Folly got creative and used everything from cardboard to boogie boards to ensure they did not miss out on the rare chance to sled on Folly!

The beach was filled with people of all ages partaking in snowball fights, building snowmen, making snow angels, and walking their dogs. The snowstorm on Folly Beach was an extremely rare event, but these photos (almost) make us wish it happened more often!

Peaceful & Beautiful

This was my families first time at the ocean and I will never forget the look of joy on my youngest daughter’s face the moment the waves first came up on her feet. The beach was not over crowded, was clean, and was great for relaxing, swimming, and collecting seashells. There is a long pier for fishing off of and it is a beautiful sight at night. The town atmosphere was a nice mix between relaxing and having a good time and can work for the over 21 crowd as well as for families with small kids. There are plenty of great food stops and cute shops.

Fantastic & Peaceful

This beach is very relaxing and a great place to chill out. We saw several dolphins and enjoyed walking on the fishing pier. I would consider staying on the beach here next time we are in Charleston instead of downtown.
