Fall into Folly

Fall into Folly

As the summer takes its leave and the fall approaches, it is the perfect time to visit Folly Beach. Despite what most people think, a beach trip can be a year-long activity that extends past just the summer months. Fall beach trips have many upsides: fewer crowds, comfortable weather, and more!

Since most people believe that the beach is an activity only meant for the warmer months, like May through August, crowds at the beach start to dwindle down come September and continue to shrink going into the winter months. When most people think of the beach, they think of hot weather, sunshine, and the salty breeze, so why would they go when beaches aren’t experiencing these conditions? Generally, the off-season for beaches falls between November and February, because of less favorable weather as we approach winter. What most people don’t know is that later in the year, after the Atlantic Ocean has had time to heat up over the summer months, the ocean water is significantly warmer and more pleasant than the water in summer! Ocean water feels warmer near the fall because it takes longer to heat up and cool down due to its high heat capacity.

In addition to the warmer water and smaller crowds, a trip to the beach, including travel and lodging, is less expensive and more affordable in the fall! Going to the beach in the fall is generally cheaper because of a reduced demand after the summer peak season. With kids returning to school and adults returning to work in full swing, the overall demand for beach vacations significantly decreases, leading to more availability and even better deals.

The fall also brings your classic fall festivities. This year, the Folly Beach Mermaids & Mateys event is on October 4th and 5th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event combines fun and helps to create everlasting memories. Mermaids & Mateys also includes our Salty Saturday Center Street Closure Event, which features food and drinks, arts, crafts, and fashion vendors, live music on multiple stages, a huge area just for kids, and more.

Peaceful & Beautiful

This was my families first time at the ocean and I will never forget the look of joy on my youngest daughter’s face the moment the waves first came up on her feet. The beach was not over crowded, was clean, and was great for relaxing, swimming, and collecting seashells. There is a long pier for fishing off of and it is a beautiful sight at night. The town atmosphere was a nice mix between relaxing and having a good time and can work for the over 21 crowd as well as for families with small kids. There are plenty of great food stops and cute shops.

Fantastic & Peaceful

This beach is very relaxing and a great place to chill out. We saw several dolphins and enjoyed walking on the fishing pier. I would consider staying on the beach here next time we are in Charleston instead of downtown.
