February Fishing Forecast

Fishing in Folly Beach has been good as we continue to enjoy our mild winter. Nearshore and Deep Sea fishing charters have been producing good size and numbers of King Mackerel, Black Drum, Sheepshead, Redfish, Black Sea Bass and several other species. These fish are aggressively attacking a variety of cut and live baits. We have also found a tendency to score larger fish on big artificial lures such as Bucktail jigs and 5 inch Z-man swim baits by trolling and jigging around submerged structure and rock piles.

With the absence of prolonged cold fronts so far this year the inshore fishing charters out of Folly Beach has been outstanding. We have been targeting large schools of Redfish both in the creeks and on the flats and connecting with them well most of the time. The Redfish have been biting live shrimp, mud minnows and smaller soft plastics made by Z-Man. We have been having good luck fishing everything slowly in water 1 to 10 ft deep. Big schools of Redfish are cruising the flats and can be caught using soft plastics, live shrimp and mud minnows and cut mullet. Many big redfish are being caught and we have had much of the water to ourselves, especially during the week. Keep in mind the fish can be spooky and a quiet approach will help you get more bites. The best thing to do is give them some room and watch how they react to your presentation. If they don’t hit the first bait you throw towards them try another. We recently had to back off our fish a few times and let them rest for 5 or 10 minutes before making another presentation and hooking up. The fish are here and biting and our short cold spells will soon give way to longer warm spells then, before you know it Spring will be here! There are plenty of good dates open but with Spring Break and Summer vacation on everyone’s mind a lot of reservations are coming in. Get you trips booked now to get the dates you want. You can reserve your date and make your reservation online here, or simply call or text to connect with us. Let’s go fishing!

We are looking forward to fishing with you!

Monthly Spotlight: Black Magic Cafe

With three locations in Charleston, we’re lucky enough to be one of them. Black Magic Cafe is the epitome of easy mornings with a cup of coffee in hand — not to mention their beans are locally sourced from our friends at King Bean! With all the eats from breakfast burritos to BLTs to French toast, this menu is no easy decision. One of our favorites is The Folly Mess featuring home fries sautéed with mushrooms, onions, peppers and tomatoes, topped with two sunny eggs. It’s completed with a drizzle of chipotle crema, shredded cheddar and a side of sourdough toast! Black Magic Cafe’s family friendly atmosphere make it the easiest place to wake up to.

Charleston Forts

Charleston Forts
With all the hustle and bustle constantly surrounding Charleston, it’s easy to overlook the rich history that shaped it into the busy city it is today. Being that the American Civil War began right in our neighborhood, the historical forts surrounding the Low country are not something to be missed by any local or visiting history buffs.
Here are a couple of well-known forts worth venturing to when you want to get your history on:
  • Fort Sumpter- Built in 1811 and famously known as the starting point for the American Civil War, Fort Sumpter is a must-see for anyone visiting the Low country. Since the fort is only accessible by boat and through an official National Parks tour, you must make sure to get your tickets online if you’re planning to visit.
  • Fort Moultrie- For a fort originally constructed of only palmetto logs and sand, Fort Moultrie really held it’s own. This was the first fort built on Sullivans Island, and it has a long and interesting history, best seen firsthand. Next time you’re at the beach and want to switch it up, Fort Moultrie is worth the visit.
So, don’t hide out! Visit one of Charleston’s historic forts today and learn something new about the Low country you know and love.

January Fishing Forecast

January Fishing Forecast

Our Fishing charters in Folly Beach have seen plenty of action lately as warmer weather and calm conditions have settled into our area. Resident Redfish have begun to gather up in schools on and near the flats and can be seen cruising and sunning themselves at low tide. We have been boating those fish using soft plastic baits by Z-Man and a variety of cut or live bait including shrimp and mud minnows. Light tackle and accurate casts help present our baits more naturally to these wary fish. The Speckled Trout bite has been good wherever you can find a combination of structure and current. These fish have been taking both plastics and live shrimp very well and when you locate them they seem to be appearing in solid numbers. This time of year the Speckled Trout are often far off the bank so start fan casting 100 feet off the bank and work your way in until you get your first bite.

Deep-Sea fishing charters at the nearshore reefs have been finding Black Sea Bass, Sheepshead, Black Drum and some big Bull Reds! These bruisers have been cruising the surface chasing live baits. We have been able to catch them on topwater plugs, metal jigs, and soft plastics. Most of these fish are well over 30 inches long and have plenty of room to run when hooked so when you get connected to be ready for a long fight! I expect January to provide lots of action this year so get to my online calendar and get your spot saved. I look forward to seeing you on deck soon!

We are looking forward to fishing with you!

December Fishing Forecast

December Fishing Forecast

Deep-Sea, nearshore and inshore Charter Fishing in Charleston and Folly Beach has been great the past few weeks and I expect it will continue through the end of the year. We have battled some cooler than usual weather but overall water temps are about normal again and that has kept the fish and fisherman happy! Nearshore fishing charters have been riding out to the reefs to enjoy the nonstop action from Weakfish, Black Drum, Sheepshead, Redfish and more including False Albacore. We have been targeting those fish with cut bait, casting jigs and topwater lures that have been bringing explosive strikes. To be on the other end of the rod when that happens is a feeling you will never forget!

Inshore fishing charters are putting up solid numbers of Speckled Trout and Redfish as these species begin to fatten themselves up for our short winter. Hungry redfish are being caught on mullet, crab, and artificials made by Z-Man and DOA. The Speckled
Trout can often be caught nearby in deeper water on live shrimp, mud minnows and soft plastics. Sheepshead will begin congregating in larger numbers this month as the waters continue to cool. We will fish for them during the slower tides and they can provide a challenge due to their light bite. Many times an angler will set the hook on what they think is a little fish and they suddenly have the rod doubled over with a fish trying to take cover back in the rocks or structure, so be prepared for a strong fight all the way up to the boat! We have been catching those fish on fiddler crabs and live shrimp. We have good tides coming up and the fishing should continue to provide plenty of action for people who want to get out on the water. Come on out, it’s still not too late to catch your biggest fish of the year!

Surf Therapy

2019-12-02T09:10:53-05:00

Surf Therapy

To many, the act of surfing seems like an unachievable activity, due to their inexperience or hesitation. To others, however, surfing has become a necessary form of treatment, a version of therapy for some individuals.

Surf Therapy is a recent development in psychotherapy treatments used to help people suffering from PTSD, addiction issues, life-threatening injuries, and many additional ailments. It works because the act of surfing not only connects the patient to nature but also allows them to remain mindful and present while on the board. Not to mention the fact that surfing is no easy activity, so the patients often feel a strong sense of accomplishment after catching a wave.

Next time you look at that the surfboard that’s been sitting in your garage the last 5 years, maybe take it to the beach and try to catch a wave or two.
