Charleston Forts
With all the hustle and bustle constantly surrounding Charleston, it’s easy to overlook the rich history that shaped it into the busy city it is today. Being that the American Civil War began right in our neighborhood, the historical forts surrounding the Low country are not something to be missed by any local or visiting history buffs.
Here are a couple of well-known forts worth venturing to when you want to get your history on:
  • Fort Sumpter- Built in 1811 and famously known as the starting point for the American Civil War, Fort Sumpter is a must-see for anyone visiting the Low country. Since the fort is only accessible by boat and through an official National Parks tour, you must make sure to get your tickets online if you’re planning to visit.
  • Fort Moultrie- For a fort originally constructed of only palmetto logs and sand, Fort Moultrie really held it’s own. This was the first fort built on Sullivans Island, and it has a long and interesting history, best seen firsthand. Next time you’re at the beach and want to switch it up, Fort Moultrie is worth the visit.
So, don’t hide out! Visit one of Charleston’s historic forts today and learn something new about the Low country you know and love.
