1,000-Mile Sailing Race Across the Eastern Coast Stays Night at Folly Beach Checkpoint

1,000-Mile Sailing Race Across the Eastern Coast Stays Night at Folly Beach Checkpoint

This past week was a huge success as many spectators gathered on Folly Beach to watch the Worrell 1000 race!

The Worrell Race is an offshore long-distance catamaran race in the Atlantic waters between Hollywood Beach, Florida, and Virginia Beach, Virginia. This exciting 1,000-mile race featured 13 two-person crews from 6 countries around the world who were filled with persistence and dedication.

Although the race is 1,000 miles as of today, it was not always like that. The origins of The Worrell 1000 started when the Worrell brothers, Chris and Michael, placed a bet in a bar that it was impossible to sail a sixteen-foot catamaran from Virginia Beach to Florida. Michael Worrell then began to gather his crew and set sail in hopes of winning the bet. They, unfortunately, had to stop in Fort Lauderdale due to their catamaran being in poor condition. Although they did not win the bet, they still sailed through two hurricanes and multiple boat repairs. Many years later, the Worrell brothers changed the 954-mile journey into what today is known as the Worrell Race 1000. These crews set sail for 12 days, with overnight stops along the East Coast. This year, one of those stops was our beloved Folly Beach!

As this race moved away from its 24-hour continuous format, it adopted a more spectator-friendly checkpoint-to-checkpoint racing arrangement, mainly to cater to the excitement that faster and more powerful boats provided for spectators.

Once sailors arrived on Folly, they settled into their rooms at the Tides hotel and met across the street at Loggerhead’s Beach Grill, where they were treated to a local Lowcountry Boil and BBQ to start off the evening. During the event at Loggerhead’s, they offered a 5-minute Facebook Live featuring interviews with the racers that were broadcasted live via their Facebook page. It was a great chance for the locals to enjoy some great drinks and food with the racers before they sailed off to Surfside Beach the next day. Thank you so much to Loggerhead’s for hosting this amazing evening for the racers!

It was so exciting to see such a huge audience turnout to cheer on the competitors. Along with this grand turnout, many pups also enjoyed watching the race take place from the beach as sailors set sail to begin the 7th leg of the 2022 race along the tides of Folly Beach. This event was a great way for the Folly Beach community to gather together and enjoy a day at the beach as they watched one exceptional race.

Some new and exciting elements have been added to the race this year, including a Champion’s Perpetual Trophy for the winning team! As well as the chance to be named the recipient of the new sportsmanship award of a fellow sailor and Worrell alumni, Sandra Tartaglino – who was taken from us far too soon. Congratulations to Team Australia for finishing first place with a final-leg victory after two weeks and hundreds of miles at sea a time with an incredible time of 87:40:44.

May Fishing Forecast

Folly Beach fishing Charters in May! One of my favorite months to go fishing. Calm waters and mild temperatures are common now. By this time of year, our inshore fishing charters are seeing big Bull Redfish, Sharks, Flounder, Spanish Mackerel, Speckled Trout, Black Drum, and Sheepshead on a daily basis. We have been fishing in the creeks a little less and spending more time fishing the grasslines and inlets. Deep Sea and nearshore fishing charters have been catching Mahi Mahi, King Mackerel, Wahoo, Cobia, Amberjack, and a variety of Snapper and other bottom fish on the offshore reefs and trolling spots in 70 to 100 ft of water. This is a great time of year for all kinds of fishermen. We can employ easy-to-teach tactics to just about anyone in a short amount of time. So from beginners of any age to seasoned anglers, we will be able to put together a great experience for you. Get your family and friends together and let’s make it happen! Volunteers Pick Thousands of Pieces of Litter from Folly

Volunteers Pick Thousands of Pieces of Litter from Folly

Cleanup Team Folly Beach
Toby the Turtle’s first annual Folly Beach Island-Wide Spring Clean took place on Sunday, April 3rd, 2022. The event was a deep clean of the island’s roadways and beach areas completed by more than 225 volunteers.
The event, organized by the Folly Association of Business (FAB) Litter Committee, had twelve stations operated by the South Carolina Aquarium and Charleston Surfrider. The staff members of these fantastic organizations supplied equipment and Litter Free Digital Journal (LFDJ) data forms to volunteers, and they educated participants on the importance of correct data entry. LFDJ is a critical tool for tracking the amount and types of litter collected during a sweep. This data provides information about our coast’s litter issues and is instrumental in lobbying our state government for rules to help protect our wildlife and keep our waters and beaches cleaner.
Together, the hundreds of volunteers collected nearly 12,000 individual pieces of litter on Folly! The volunteers thoroughly combed the island, uncovering tons of discarded debris not only on the beach but also throughout the business district and residential areas. LFDJ logs revealed that 68% of the waste collected was plastic-based. Although both styrofoam and plastic retail bags are banned from Folly, volunteers removed a few hundred of them! However, the most numerous item collected by far was cigarettes and smoking filters, with over 2,600 pieces. The second most common litter item recovered was plastic food wrappers, with over 1,300 pieces. The group even uncovered a vehicle in the marshy area near 9th Street West Ext.!
We want to shout out to the FAB Litter Committee and their Chairperson, Vanessa Oltmann, as well as Toby the Turtle for orchestrating this event and for everything they do for Folly every day. We would also like to thank the South Carolina Aquarium, Charleston Surfrider, Waves4Women, JI ACTKIDVISTS, West Ashley High School Senior Marketing Department, and Sunset Cay Group. We could not have done it without all of these wonderful people coming together!
And last but certainly not least, we want to thank every individual who came out to participate! Toby is stoked about all of the people who care enough to help Keep Folly Clean! This was the first annual litter sweep on Folly, and it will continue in the years to come. Join us next year!

April Fishing Forecast

Our Folly Beach fishing boats are reporting good fishing this past week! Typically as the month goes on we will have better weather and the fishing will get more consistent. Inshore we are catching Speckled Trout, Redfish, Black Drum and Flounder on live and cut bait. If you favor fishing with artificials the fish are striking jigs equally as well. We landed our first sharks of the season a few days ago which means the big fish are moving in from offshore. For groups that want to get out and enjoy a few hours on the water with us a 4 hour charter is perfect. For the more serious angler I recommend the 6 hour inshore charter. We can cover more ground, target more species and typically employ a variety of techniques during the 6 hour trip. This year we have introduced 2.5 hour family style trips with easy bottom fishing for our young and casual anglers. Or mix up your charter by adding a dolphin tour to your family fishing trip. It’s the perfect way to keep your time on the water interesting for everyone.

Deep Sea fishing charters have been catching Mahi Mahi, King Mackerel, Amberjack and a variety of Snapper and other bottom fish on the offshore reefs and trolling spots in 70 to 100 ft of water. I recommend the 8 or 10 hour charter for those of you interested in making the run to the offshore grounds. For those of you that want to bring home fish to eat the 8 and 10 hr Deep Sea charter give you the best chance to bring some fresh seafood home with you. If you have any questions please text or call 843-696-4231. Feel free to email or book reservations right here online! Hope to see you on deck soon!

Can You Visit the Morris Island Lighthouse?

Can you visit the Morris Island Lighthouse?

Lighthouse Folly Beach

The Morris Island Lighthouse is a majestic historic landmark on the East end of Folly Beach. Visitors are not allowed to enter the lighthouse since the land around it has eroded, and the lighthouse now sits off the beach a few hundred yards into the water. However, you can still get close to the lighthouse at Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve, a beautiful, quiet beach area that’s great for fishing, collecting shells, or just unwinding. Try visiting right at sunset, and you’ll take some of the most beautiful pictures ever.

The lighthouse is in the process of being restored and preserved by shoring up the structure and stabilizing the foundation against erosion. The group that is behind the restoration is called Save The Light. It is a conglomerate of concerned citizens and local businesses who care about the history and beauty of the Morris Island Lighthouse and are fighting to maintain it as the Folly landmark that it has been since 1872.

Why is Charleston Called the “Holy City”?

2022-02-18T17:26:44-05:00

Why is Charleston Called the “Holy City”?

You can tell a lot about a city by the nickname it’s received. Many call Charleston “The Holy City.” But why? We dove into our local history to figure that out!

Founded by the English in 1670, Charleston is the oldest city in South Carolina. Many immigrants soon followed and brought their rich cultures and religions with them. French Huguenots & Presbyterians from Scotland were some of the first immigrants to join the English, and Catholicism and even Judaism eventually took roots in our beautiful city. Over time, many other religions would call Charleston home, as it grew into one of the most infamously religiously-tolerant cities in the world. Many of these religions came together and built beautiful and grand churches that can still be seen on our historic cobblestone street corners today. One of the city’s most infamous churches, The Circular Congressional Church, was founded in this manner in 1804. It is famous for many things, including speaking about religious and political freedoms in the late 1700s and their local activism in their pursuit of interdependence. It is also home to the oldest graveyard in Charleston, with some monuments dating back to the late 1600s. Eventually, Charleston became home to over 400 churches, and their steeples dot the skyline.
Any direction you turn, dozens of steeples can be seen poking through the trees, giving rise to the nickname, “The Holy City.”

February Fishing Forecast

Folly Beach Deep Sea fishing charters going on both Nearshore and Deep Sea fishing trips have been producing good size and numbers of Black Drum, Sheepshead, Redfish, Black Sea Bass and several other species. These fish are aggressively attacking a variety of cut and live baits. We have also found a tendency to score larger fish on big artificial lures such as Bucktail jigs and 5 inch swim baits by jigging around submerged structure and rock piles.

Inshore fishing charters out of Folly Beach have been targeting large schools of Redfish both in the creeks and on the flats. The Redfish have been biting live shrimp, mud minnows and smaller soft plastics. We have been having good luck fishing everything slowly in water 1 to 10 ft deep. Many big redfish are being caught and we have had much of the water to ourselves, especially during the week. Keep in mind the fish can be spooky and a quiet approach will help you get more bites. The best thing to do is give them some room and watch how they react to your presentation. We recently had to back off our fish a few times and let them rest for 5 or 10 minutes before making another presentation and hooking up. Soon our short cold spells will give way to longer warm spells then, before you know it Spring will be here! There are plenty of good dates open but with Spring Break and Summer vacation on everyone’s mind a lot of reservations are coming in. Get your Charleston and Folly Beach fishing charters booked now. You can reserve your date and make your reservation online here, or simply call or text to connect with us. Let’s go charter fishing!
