Folly Beach Pier is Back Open

Folly Beach Pier is Back Open

After being closed since October 19, 2020, the newly reconstructed Folly Beach Pier is finally open to the public! The construction project finished ahead of schedule, standing 22 feet above sea level and 1,049 feet long. Its 25-foot-wide walkway opens up to a 7,500-square-foot diamond head platform with shade structures, benches, restrooms, and other amenities. Folly Beach Pier visitors are offered stunning views of the Atlantic and some of the best saltwater fishing around. Guests can also visit the Pier 101 Restaurant and Bar, the Gangplank Gift and Tackle Shop, and beach access points to enhance their visit.

The Folly Beach Pier is well known for its gatherings and community events, such as fishing tournaments, Moonlight Mixer dance series, and Folly Pier Fests! The original Folly Beach Pier, built in 1931, started the story of this Lowcountry icon. Since the construction of the first pier, standing at 97 feet in length, Folly Beach has seen several renditions of the Folly Beach Pier, including 1960s Ocean Plaza featuring a boardwalk and amusement rides and the Edwin S. Taylor Folly Beach Fishing Pier constructed in 1995. Typical wooden pile piers have a 20-25 years lifespan, but with modern improvements, Folly Beach’s newest pier is predicted to have a longer life expectancy at 65+ years!

The Folly Beach Pier is open daily from 8am-sunset (operating hours may vary) for your enjoyment! Visitation is free, although a parking charge has been implemented at the pier facility to help fund maintenance and staffing.

May Fishing Forecast

There’s no place like Folly Beach, and we love Folly Beach fishing in May! By this time of year, our Deep Sea and Inshore fishing charters are catching many different species of sportfish. We are able to target Bull Redfish, Sharks, Flounder, Spanish Mackerel, Speckled Trout, Black Drum, and more on a daily basis. The water temperature has been hovering around 68 degrees for a while now, so plenty of species have moved in from offshore into our coastal waters.
We have been fishing in the creeks a little less and spending more time fishing the grass lines and Jetties. Warm water and plenty of natural bait have all our local game fish feeding on a more consistent basis. Deep Sea fishing and nearshore fishing charters have been catching Mahi Mahi, King Mackerel, Amberjack, and a variety of Snapper and other bottom fish. We have been fishing the offshore reefs and trolling spots in 70 to 100 ft of water. This is a great time of year for all kinds of fishermen. Our fishing charters range from 2.5 hr trips to 10 hour trips and start at $300. We are happy to host everyone from beginners of any age to seasoned anglers, and we will be able to put together a great experience for you. I suggest you make your reservations as early as possible.

Over 11,000 Items Of Debris Collected in Toby the Turtle’s Earth Month Island-Wide Spring Litter Sweep

Over 11,000 Items Of Debris Collected in Toby the Turtle’s Earth Month Island-Wide Spring Litter Sweep

Folly Beach locals and visitors kicked off Earth Month together in true Folly form with Toby the Turtle’s Earth Month Island-Wide Spring Litter Sweep on Sunday, April 2nd! Hosted by the Folly Association of Business (FAB) Litter Committee and the South Carolina Aquarium, 174 volunteers gave their time and effort to help collect litter debris across our island and were rewarded for their hard work, of course.
Out of the 11,554 pieces of debris found and recorded in the South Carolina Litter Journal by 9 stations set up from the Morris Island Lighthouse to the Folly Beach County Park, 70% of it was plastic-based. 39% of this plastic was cigarette butts and 27% was packaging, electronic smoking devices, and more. Even with cigarette disposal sites and garbage cans located up and down Center Street, at beach access points, and more frequently visited locations, smoking debris still ends up being one of the most collected items during litter sweeps. In addition, 33% of the litter was food-related plastics, and 3% were banned plastics. The Folly Beach Chair Company’s Sweep Dragon Initiative joined us again as an important part of our sweep by collecting all the trash bags and large items of debris across the island.
We believe in “work hard, party harder” here on Folly. After walking around for almost 2 hours in the hot sun picking up trash, volunteers got to enjoy a fun exclusive after-party hosted by Taco Boy Folly Beach and discounts at local shops and restaurants including Lunar Light Botanicals, Folly Beach Crab Shack, Sunset Cay Shipstore, The Washout, and Rita’s. Plus, these participants get to celebrate their contribution at Holy City Brewing as a part of the Lowcountry Earth Week celebration on Saturday, April 22nd!
The fun doesn’t stop there! After the sweep and all the festivities, volunteers got to either bring home their very special wristbands, sponsored by Country Salt Apparel, or drop them in a pot of soil at Taco Boy to grow into brand new plants. How does this work? Instead of using plastic wristbands, the FAB Litter Committee provided paper wristbands embedded with seeds that once planted, would grow into local pollinators. The flowers you could grow include Birds Eyes, Snap Dragon, Dwarf Godetia, Sweet Alyssum, Black Eyed Susan, and Catchfly. It’s a litter sweep that just keeps on giving!
We thank our amazing volunteers from the bottom of our hearts for helping us collect all of this litter and for helping Toby #KeepFollyClean. There’s a reason Folly Beach has been referred to as the “cleanest beach in the Charleston area” and that reason is YOU! We couldn’t have done this without you and can’t wait to see how clean we can get our island to be with our next sweep. Save the date; World Ocean Day Litter Sweep on Thursday, June 8th! Learn more on our Litter Committee page here.

April Fishing Forecast

It’s Spring, and Folly Beach fishing charters are reporting warming weather and good fishing! Typically as the month goes on we will have more sunny days and less wind. With these variables becoming less of an issue, the fishing will become more consistent. Inshore we are catching Speckled Trout, Redfish, Black Drum and Flounder on live shrimp, minnows and cut bait. If you favor fishing with artificials, the fish are striking jigs equally as well.

Deep Sea fishing charters have been catching Cobia, Mahi Mahi, King Mackerel, Amberjack and a variety of Snapper and other bottom fish on the offshore reefs and trolling spots in 70 to 100 ft of water. I recommend the 8 or 10 hour charter for those of you interested in making the run to the offshore grounds. For those of you that want to bring home fish to eat, the 8 and 10 hr Deep Sea charter gives you the best chance to bring some fresh seafood home with you.

For groups that want to get out and enjoy a few hours on the water with us, a 4 hour charter is perfect. For the more serious angler, I recommend the 6 hour inshore charter. We can cover more ground, target more species and typically employ a variety of techniques during the 6 hour trip. This year we have introduced 2.5 hour family style trips for our young and casual anglers. It’s the perfect way to keep your time on the water interesting for everyone. If you have any questions please text or call 843-696-4231. Feel free to email or book reservations right here online! Hope to see you on deck soon!

We are looking forward to fishing with you!

March Fishing Forecast

Charter fishing on Folly Beach has been great the past few weeks. Deep Sea fishing and inshore fishing has benefited from a very mild winter and warm temperatures. Inshore fishing on Folly Beach is a great option this time of year. The waters are typically calm, making it a smooth outing for anglers of all ages and skill levels. We typically can fish close to our pickup location so we spend more time fishing rather than driving. Inshore fishing charters have been targeting Redfish, Speckled Trout Black Drum and Flounder as they begin to feed more heavily in our warming waters. We have mainly been casting live minnows and shrimp along oyster beds and grass lines to draw strikes from fish on the search for prey.

Deep Sea Fishing charters have been targeting assorted Snapper, Wahoo, King Mackerel, Sea Bass and too many other species to mention. Nearshore fishing at the reefs and wrecks just off the beach have been catching Black Drum, Weakfish, Bluefish, Bull Redfish and Sheepshead. When considering your options, keep in mind that deep sea fishing trips are more subject to weather conditions, both inland and out to sea. To book a charter, you may do so quickly and securely online at CharlestonFishRodBendingCompany.com under the “book now tab”.  Text or call 843-696-4231 or email me at [email protected] if you have any additional questions. I hope to see you on board!

We are looking forward to fishing with you!

Folly Beach Brings Together Beach Lovers for Over 30 Years With the Annual Sea & Sand Festival

2023-03-10T12:32:22-05:00

Folly Beach Brings Together Beach Lovers for Over 30 Years With the Annual Sea & Sand Festival

For a small beach town located on the furthest east-most point of the United States, celebrating everything the beach and sea has gifted us is a value shared by locals and visitors alike.
Dating back to the 1990s, the Sea & Sand Festival was created as a way for local businesses to share their gifts with others in a family-friendly way. From the Folly River Park straight to the beach, the Sea & Sand weekend included an artisan street closure event, as well as some healthy competition in the sand. This year, a portion of the proceeds benefitted the Warrior Surf Foundation and Folly Beach Surfers Healing.
During the 31st Annual Sea & Sand Festival this year, Center Street was completely taken over by Folly Beach restaurants, shops, and vendors for a celebration of the laid-back, fun beach town that everyone loves. The street closure event featured local bands across multiple stages, more than 80 Folly art, craft, and fashion vendors, and a surfboard painting contest. There was also a robust kids area complete with the Sea and Sand Circus by Good Clean Fun featuring aerial performers, tall jugglers, face painters, spin art, bubble therapy, sand crafts, inflatables, and more fun for the entire family. The popular rodeo shark was a big hit in its return to take on brave challengers!
Then, on Sunday, February 26th, local beach lovers brought their beach tools and their crafty skills to the Sand Sculpting Competition beachfront at the Tides Hotel. Awards for Best Family, Best Adults, Best Architecture, and Best in Show were given out, along with two honorable mentions, and everyone of all ages had a blast creating their sculptures.
Best Family: Octopus by Michael Chaves
Best Adults: Hippos & Alligator by Tamara Smith
Best Architecture: Squid by David Crosby
Best in Show: Mermaid by Travis Proctor
Honorable Mentions: Shell & Sea Stars and Shark & Man
We want to say a big thank you to everyone far and wide that has joined us for our many Sea & Sand Festivals hosted over the past 31 years. Here’s to another 31 more!

February Fishing Forecast

February Fishing Forecast

Charter fishing in Folly Beach has been good as we enjoy our mild winter. Deep Sea fishing charters have been producing good size and numbers of King Mackerel, Black Drum, Sheepshead, Redfish, Black Sea Bass and several other species. These fish are aggressively attacking a variety of cut and live baits. Our boats are fishing in 50 to 70 ft of water and focusing on reefs and wrecks while bottom fishing. We have also found a tendency to score larger fish on big artificial lures such as Bucktail jigs and 5 inch Z-man swim baits by trolling and jigging around submerged structure and rock piles.

With the absence of prolonged cold fronts so far this year, the inshore fishing charters out of Charleston and Folly Beach has been outstanding. We have been targeting large schools of Redfish both in the creeks and on the flats and connecting with them well most of the time. The Redfish have been biting live shrimp, mud minnows and smaller soft plastics made by Z-Man. We have been having good luck fishing everything slowly in water 1 to 10 ft deep.

Big schools of Redfish are cruising the flats and can be caught using soft plastics, live shrimp and mud minnows and cut mullet. Many big redfish are being caught and we have had much of the water to ourselves, especially during the week. Keep in mind the fish can be spooky and a quiet approach will help you get more bites. The best thing to do is give them some room and watch how they react to your presentation. If they don’t hit the first bait you throw towards them, try another. We recently had to back off our fish a few times and let them rest for 5 or 10 minutes before making another presentation and hooking up. The fish are here and biting and our short cold spells will soon give way to longer warm spells then before you know it, spring will be here! There are plenty of good dates open but with spring break and summer vacation on everyone’s mind, a lot of reservations are coming in. Get your trips booked now to get the dates you want. You can reserve your date and make your reservation online here, or simply call or text to connect with us. Let’s go fishing!

We are looking forward to fishing with you!

The highly anticipated and widely beloved Taste of Folly Festival was hosted with the Taste of Folly Cocktail Competition on Friday, January 13th and the “Savory Saturday” street closure event on Saturday, January 14th this year.
The weekend kicked off with the Taste of Folly Cocktail Competition on Friday, January 13th where our local mixologists battled it out at the Tides Hotel over custom craft cocktails created with the featured Larceny Bourbon. We drank, we laughed, and we had a blast as the judges decided who had the best cocktail of the event.
1st Place: “The Bird” by The Drop In Bar & Deli created with Larceny Bourbon, peach schnapps, lemon juice, and ginger beer.
2nd Place: “Larceny Latte” by BLU Beach Bar & Grill created with Larceny bourbon, Kahlua, cold brew coffee, and assorted syrup flavors.
3rd Place: “Prison Break” by Jack of Cups Saloon created with pineapple-infused Larceny Bourbon, cachaca, lemon juice, orgeat, sugar cane & pineapple puree, and Cholula hot sauce.
The cocktail competition sold out QUICK this year so be sure to grab your tickets extra early next year!
Then, the fun continued on Saturday, January 14th with the Savory Saturday street closure festival. It was a delicious celebration of Folly Beach as our amazing bars, restaurants, and vendors took over Center Street to share their love of good food and great fun! We enjoyed signature dishes from our local businesses, cooking demonstrations, a hot dog eating contest, oyster shucking contest, and we even brought back the beloved ‘One Pot Showdown’ chili cook-off. Live music was enjoyed all around on our three stages, and the kids had a blast in our robust kids area.
1st Place in the Hot Dog Eating Contest: Nicholas Elmore with 15 hot dogs eaten.
1st Place in the Oyster Shucking Contest: Brooklyn Paul with 28 oysters shucked.
1st Place in the ‘One Pot Showdown’: Tom Powers with their delicious chili recipe.
We are so ecstatic with how the 2023 Taste of Folly Festival went this year, we just can’t thank everyone enough for joining us and are looking forward to next year!

January Fishing Forecast

January Fishing Forecast

Folly Beach fishing has been great so far this year! Warmer weather has moved back in after a week of cooler temperatures. This means the fish are back to searching for food and we are happy to show them some options! Our inshore fishing charters have been targeting Redfish. This time of year Redfish begin to gather up in schools on the flats and in the shallow creeks. Creeks that work the best are those that give the fish good access to food and shelter from predators and plenty of structure such as docks, oyster beds and downed trees. We have been enjoying good success with live shrimp, cut mullet and small profile artificial baits on light jigs.

The Speckled Trout bite has also recovered from the cold snap. We have been catching them on mud minnows and small finesse soft plastic jigs cast around points and creek mouths. Most productive areas seem to be in 8 to 15 ft of water. Look for current, oyster beds and irregular shaped shorelines to give you clues on where the fish may be staging up looking for an easy meal.  A slow hopping retrieve has been producing the most strikes by far. Remember to try a variety of depths to locate the sweet spot.

Folly Beach Deep Sea fishing charters at the nearshore reefs have been finding Black Sea Bass, Weakfish, Sheepshead, Black Drum and some big Bull Reds! These bruisers have been cruising the surface chasing live baits. We have been able to catch them on top water plugs, metal jigs and soft plastics. Most of these fish are well over 30 inches long and have plenty of room to run when hooked so when you get connected be ready for a long fight! I expect January to provide lots of action this year so get to my online calendar and get your spot saved. I look forward to seeing you on deck soon! As always feel free to text or call 843-696-4231 for booking information. See you on deck!

We are looking forward to fishing with you!
