Folly Beach Dolphin Mourns the Loss of her Calf

Folly Beach Dolphin Mourns the Loss of her Calf

It is with a heavy heart that we inform our Folly community of a mother dolphin grieving the death of her calf.
The Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network has received multiple reports of a mother dolphin carrying her deceased newborn. According to the organization, it is calving season for dolphins and unfortunately, there is a percentage of neonates that do not survive. There are many possible causes that this could have happened. First time mothers are more likely to lose their babies. Ocean contamination has also been linked to an increase in the mortality rate of newborn dolphins.
When a perinatal dolphin passes away, the mother will carry and push along their deceased calf anywhere from days to weeks. This is a very sorrowful time for this mother dolphin and part of the grieving process for her.
To allow this mother to properly mourn her loss, we ask our visitors to be mindful and keep a respectable distance from the dolphins. The Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network asks visitors to not disturb the grieving process, but if they spot the pair, to report their location. The mother dolphin is likely not resting or eating during this time, and they want to continue to monitor her health.
To report a sighting, please call the SC Department of Natural Resources at 1-800-922-5431. Remember to not approach or interact with the mother or calf. We understand that many people may wish to help, but authorization is required to interact with the dolphins.
We appreciate all of the love and support that this news has already received. It is our job as beach lovers to respect and support the wildlife in the best way possible. Please spread the news by sharing our blog to other beachgoers in order to properly inform them of the situation. We wish to respect the mourning mother dolphin during this delicate situation.

National Ice Cream Day

National Ice Cream Day

We’re serving up our favorite sweet spots on Folly Beach for National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July 19th! There’s no better pairing than a perfect beach day spent on Folly with some delicious frozen treats! That’s why we’re giving you an inside scoop on some of the best places to indulge in some tasty ice cream.
The Dolce Banana Cafe is the go-to place for all sweet treats. They offer a wide variety of ice cream, frozen yogurt, milkshakes, smoothies and more. They have all the classic froyo flavors along with plenty of uncommon flavors such as Island Coconut and NY Cheesecake. With their extensive and rotating list of flavors and toppings, they have something for everybody.
The Wooden Spoon at Bert’s Market is another place full of options. Not only is their ice cream a fan favorite, but their Deli menu is admirable too. And you can’t go without mentioning the rest of their desserts that ranges from juices and smoothies to pie and cake. Whether you’re looking for a full meal or just a treat, they’ve got you covered.
For somebody looking for something a little more unique, Pineapple Hut is the place for you. They specialize in Pineapple Dole Whip which is a vegan, fat free, gluten free, and cholesterol free but equally tasty alternative. There’s very few places you can find this treat, so they sell out often. Make sure to stop by their truck earlier in the day for the best chance to enjoy their whips and soft serve.
We hope this list helps all the Folly and ice cream lovers alike out there enjoy this weekend. No matter where you go, we’re sure all these places will have you screaming for ice cream.

Coastal Living Names Folly Beach as South Carolina’s Best Beach

Coastal Living Magazine knows the best in coastal style, travel, and food, so we were over the moon to learn that they named Folly Beach as the Best Beach in South Carolina. “In Charleston’s backyard, Folly Beach is funky, free-spirited, and full of  surfers, sun-seekers, and quirky souls who congregate on this Atlantic-facing barrier island and enjoy the good life.”

The ideal location of Folly Beach draws in all types of adventurers who seek a carefree lifestyle. Center Beach on Folly Beach has a distinguished reputation as the hub of the island, including the Folly Pier and Folly Beach County Park, at the island’s west end. The excellent fishing off the pier offers pristine and spectacular destinations like the County Park, which are just some of the few reasons Folly Beach is so unique. Thank you, Coastal Living Magazine, for your kind words!

Cleaning Up After Others

Cleaning Up After Others, a Story of a Hometown Hero

Folly Beach Clean Up

We’re so happy to have everyone back on Folly Beach, but unfortunately, with the crowds comes the trash. New York Times author Maria Wollan met up with resident Vanessa Oltmann to see what a small impact can make on Folly Beach. Vanessa spends her free time picking up debris on the beach and is an excellent reminder of how the little things can make a big difference.

Vanessa mentions that she’s used to picking up things like plastic wrappers and cigarette butts, but the re-opening of Folly Beaches have brought more debris. She’s noticed endless empty takeout containers and countless alcohol bottles. It’s the little things, left without care, like children’s Juice Box straws that can be detrimental to our animals. It’s Vanessa’s hope that her small action will ignite a change, and others may look up to her and say, “Momma, look what she’s doing. We should do that, too.” We love our beautiful beach, and we know you all do too, so we want to remind you to do your part in helping to keep Folly clean! After a fun-filled day playing in the sand, remember to clean up after yourself and try to leave the beach cleaner than how you found it.

We want to thank Vanessa and everyone else who helps out for the beautiful work you do to keep our beach and sea safe for all! We are eternally grateful… and we know our wildlife is too!
