What to do on Folly in the Winter

2025-02-25T09:56:24-05:00

It doesn’t matter what time of year it is; Folly Beach is always the perfect place to escape reality. The winter and summer seasons offer different advantages, but both seasons can be awesome when you have ideas of what to do. From things to do outside to shopping and going out to eat, the list is endless when it comes to enjoying Folly at any time of the year.

Go to the Beach
Even though it may be a little chilly, the beach is wonderful any time of year! The cooler time of year likely means the beach is way less crowded, making it the perfect time for long beach walks. In addition to this, the cooler season is a great time for collecting. Winter can often bring unique shells to the shore, making it the optimal time for shell hunting. Heading down to the beach is especially peaceful during the sunrise and sunset, where you have the opportunity to see beautiful colors fill the sky while listening to waves crash on the shore.

On-Water Activities
This time of year may not be suitable for everyone when it comes to swimming, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still do it! Folly Beach is known for having some pretty good waves; you can often see surfers in the water year-round. If you would prefer to stay out of the water directly, you can try paddle boarding or kayaking, which will likely keep you a little dry. Nonetheless, these activities are a great way to enjoy the ocean – even if it is a little colder than usual!

Visit Local Restaurants
Folly has a plethora of restaurants that can satisfy just about any craving you have. When it comes to authentic seafood, you can head to the Folly Beach Crab Shack, where you can get shrimp, crab, oysters, and much more. Need a quick and easy lunch? Drop-in Deli has a selection of fresh and delicious sandwiches, wraps, and salads that you can grab on the go. Breakfast lovers can head over to Lost Dog Cafe to start the day with coffee and amazing dishes that will set you up for a great rest of the day.

Go Shopping
Folly Beach has several quaint beach shops on the island where you can find gifts to bring home or cute new clothes. Aqua Beach Store has a large selection of clothes, jewelry, and other beach necessities. If you are looking for a full day of shopping, you can journey about 20 minutes away into downtown Charleston. Here, you can shop on King Street, which has all different types of stores, from fancy to beachy to sporty.

January Fishing Report

Folly Beach fishing charter reports are confirming that winter is here! That means cooler water, an extra layer of clothing and schooled up Redfish! Folly Beach will hold schools of Redfish all winter long. Some schools will eat more readily than others, so finding the right group of fish is key. These schools of Redfish will cruise the numerous flats in Folly Beach. We have been catching those fish using soft plastics, live shrimp, mud minnows and cut mullet. Many big redfish are being caught and we have had much of the water to ourselves, especially during the week. Keep in mind the fish can be spooky and a quiet approach will help you get more bites. The best thing to do is give them some room and watch how they react to your presentation. If they don’t hit the first bait you throw towards them, try another. We recently had to back off our fish a few times and let them rest for a few minutes before making another presentation and hooking up.

Nearshore fishing charters have been producing good size and numbers of Black Drum, Sheepshead, Redfish, Black Sea Bass and several other species. These fish are aggressively attacking a variety of cut and live baits anywhere from 30 to 50 ft of water. On calmer days fast sinking paddle tail jigs have drawn aggressive strikes as the fish compete for any opportunity to feed.

Our Deep Sea boats are fishing in 50 to 70 ft of water and focusing on reefs and wrecks while bottom fishing.  We have also found a tendency to score larger fish on big artificial lures such as Bucktail jigs and 5 inch Z-man swim baits by trolling and jigging around submerged structure and rock piles. Our weather has been a little tough off the beach. On days that we haven’t been to travel far due to rough conditions  we have had great luck staying inside the jetties and close to shore.

The fish are here and biting and our short cold spells will soon give way to longer warm spells then, before you know it Spring will be here! There are plenty of good dates open but with Spring Break and Summer vacation on everyone’s mind a lot of reservations are coming in. Charleston and Folly Beach seem to be getting busier every year, so get your trips booked now to get the dates you want. You can reserve your date and make your reservation online here, or simply call or text to connect with us.

November Fishing Report

November Fishing Report

Folly Beach fishing charters! November and December are some of the best months for fishing in Folly Beach. Especially for Redfish and Speckled Trout. These fish feed heavily in advance of our short winter, and now is the time to boat large numbers of quality fish.  We typically focus on fishing large schools that gather around shallow creeks and river bends, using live shrimp and minnows that are still abundant in our waters. For the angler that likes more of a skill based fishing charter we can target those fish with a variety of lures. We typically use soft plastic swim baits and crank baits. In my opinion nothing is more fun than feeling the fish attack your lure as you are working the bait past them. When you feel the fish inhale your bait a swift hook set will get you connected and ready to do battle!

On Calm days we will venture to our nearshore reefs to fish for Sheepshead and Weakfish. Both these species gather in large numbers to intercept bait fish as they begin to head to deeper waters for our short winter.  We will also expect to see large Black Drum ranging from 10 to 30 lbs. at those reefs. When those tough fish inhale your bait you need to lean back and lift your rod back to turn their heads away from the rocks or you may lose them to the structure.

As always it’s best to book in advance online but feel free to text or call with questions or to book directly with us. Our weather cancellation policy is more liberal in the winter and late morning start times are more common. I would love to see you on deck this winter so let’s get you out there to enjoy some of the best fishing Charleston and Folly Beach has to offer!

Folly Beach Charter Fishing! Deep Sea Fishing and Inshore Fishing in Folly Beach

You don’t want to miss fishing this time of year folks. The bite has been almost non stop for Redfish and Speckled Trout. The creeks around the inlet and Lighthouse are teeming with baitfish, and shrimp. The points, flats and grasslines are ideal ambush points for all of our gamefish. If you allow your guide to choose the target species and launch time you will likely have a productive, fun day on the water.

On our last few charters we have been successfully targeting Bull Redfish just off the beach and Speckled Trout inshore. The Bull Reds have been eating mullet, Pinfish and Blue Crab while the Speckled Trout have responded to Mud minnows, Shrimp and artificials. Along with the Speckled Trout we have been catching Flounder, Black Drum and plenty of inshore Redfish so a mixed bag has more often than not been the rule of the day. Follow me on Instagram for the most up to date charter results. You can also book directly online or simply call or text 843-696-4231 for information. Let’s get out on the water together!

August Fishing Report

August Fishing Report

Folly Beach fishing has been good recently as last week’s foul weather has moved on. We fished the day after the storm cleared the area and we had nice weather and calm conditions. It’s typical for the fishing to be very good after a major storm and this time around we had excellent fishing conditions. The water was still a little cloudy but that didn’t discourage the fish from biting. Bait is flush in the system in our waters again it should stay through the end of December.

The big Bull Redfish are hanging around the jetties and deep holes in the harbor. Those fish will be here until early fall. So if you want to fight big fish, book an inshore trip and let’s get after them! We are catching those Bull Reds on Blue Crab, Menhaden, Mullet and cut Bluefish.

Shark fishing has been a crowd pleaser as these predators hug the beaches and prowl the inlets in search of an easy meal. These fish are strong and fast, and this time of year we get some big ones near our inlets. Inshore Speckled Trout, Flounder and Redfish remain a favorite target. We have been casting assorted live bait such as finger mullet, mud minnows and shrimp to our inshore fish while some schools of inshore Redfish seem to favor cut baits. We have had luck in shallow areas of the marsh either a few hours before low tide, or just as the tide is coming in.

Deep Sea trips are finding King Mackerel, Triggerfish, Cobia, Snapper, Grouper and Amberjack, Sea Bass and assorted Snapper. These trips are a lot of fun and you will never truly know what you will run into out there in the deep!  If you have any questions Text me at 843-696-4231 for a quick response. You can also book and check availability online 24 hours a day. See you on deck soon!

July Fishing Report

July Fishing Report

Inshore fishing in the calm waters of Folly Beach have been great recently! Redfish, Speckled Trout and Flounder have been biting well on a variety of live and cut bait. Big sharks and Bull Redfish are hunting down our rigs in the deep holes and rock piles around our inlets and Jetties. Mackerel, Bonito and Spadefish continue to give us exciting opportunities just a few miles off the beach.

Our fishing charters are having one of the best Flounder seasons that I can recall. The fish are laid up in shallow water just outside of creek mouths and at ambush points on many flats. Our clients have caught multiple keepers on every trip. If you like catching Flounder you just may be in luck if the bite continues. The most successful approach for us involves using a float with a 3 ft leader, a split shot and a #2 circle hook with a small mullet or mud minnow hooked through the lip. We make a long cast and let the current carry the bait through the target zone. The telling bite from a Flounder happens when the float suddenly stops in the current and slowly moves just a few inches. When that happens, wait about 30 seconds and just start reeling, from there, the fight will be on!

We also have had good success fishing around the oyster beds and grass lines using floats for Speckled Trout and Redfish as well. It’s best to target those fish while we have good current. So we do our best to get you fishing during the best tides of the morning and afternoons. There are plenty of fish to target and we are family friendly. So feel free to include everyone in your crew!

History of the Folly Beach Pier

2024-07-08T09:51:22-05:00

The Folly Beach Pier, an iconic structure in Folly Beach, South Carolina, has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. The original pier, built in the 1930s, was a simple wooden structure designed to attract tourists and locals for fishing or strolls over the Atlantic Ocean. Over the decades, it became a popular gathering spot known for its beautiful ocean views and vibrant community events.

In the 1950s, the pier underwent significant renovations to enhance its durability and appeal. These improvements included the addition of a pavilion, which quickly became a hub for social activities, including dances, concerts, and various public celebrations. The pier’s popularity continued to grow, solidifying its status as a beloved landmark in the region. It played a crucial role in the local economy, drawing visitors from across the state and beyond.

However, the pier faced numerous challenges, including several destructive hurricanes. Hurricane Hugo in 1989 caused extreme damage, leading to major repairs and rebuilding efforts. Each time the pier was damaged, the community rallied to restore it, demonstrating the deep affection and value placed on this historic structure. The resilience of the Folly Beach Pier became a testament to the enduring spirit of the local residents.

The pier has recently undergone further renovations to ensure its safety and longevity. These modern updates have included enhanced structural supports, improved facilities, and accessibility features, making it a more welcoming destination for all visitors. The most extensive renovation was a complete rebuild by Cape Romain Contractors. They modified the “top-down” manner: the deck behind the restaurant and gift shop was constructed first, and then demolition and construction began at the diamond head end, working back towards the shore. Construction work started in October 2020, and the pier fully reopened to the public on December 26, 2022.

Today, the Folly Beach Pier is a cherished recreational spot that offers fishing, dining, and scenic views. It stands as a symbol of the community’s heritage and a testament to the enduring appeal of Folly Beach.
