The hit new Netflix series, “Outer Banks” has everyone currently glued to their television during quarantine. The series is about a group of teenagers referred to as the “Pogues” who live on the other side of the tracks in the Outer Banks. They spend most of their time working for the wealthy they call the “Kooks” or hanging out in their boat. However, everything changes when the ringleader of the group, John B, stumbles upon an old artifact of his missing fathers. This leads the group on a wild treasure hunt in which they are chased by law enforcement and the “Kooks.” On this journey, the group learns a lot about themselves as friendships are tested, and stakes are high.

While watching the teens hunt down the buried treasure, you can’t help but admire the quaint coastal town in which they live. The salty marshes and moss-covered trees give a warm and homey feeling. In fact, some of the destinations where the scenes were shot may seem familiar to you. This is because most of the filming for the series was done at Folly Beach. The producers originally wanted to film the series in Wilmington, North Carolina; however, Netflix pushed back on this, and they settled on the Charleston area. Most of the cast had no issue with the change of location and actually felt that it fit the setting of the film just as well.

Many Charleston locals were recruited to play extras as partying teens, bystanders, musicians, etc. Other parts of the low country, such as James Island, Hunting Island, Kiawah Island, Jones Island, Beaufort’s Barrier Islands, and the Old Village in Mount Pleasant, were also destination spots for filming. In fact, the shows lighthouse is Charleston’s very own Morris Island Lighthouse. So next time you are strolling around town, take a look at the scenery and see if you can tell if you are standing on the set of “Outer Banks.”
