Monday, August 31 is National South Carolina! We’ve gathered some facts to celebrate our Palmetto State! While the capital of South Carolina may be Columbia, the largest city in the state is Charleston while the largest barrier island is Hilton Head. South Carolina’s coastline is 187 miles long, creating barriers of islands guarding the state. Not only is South Carolina known for its gorgeous coastline, but this state is also home to sandhills, lowlands, and mountains. South Carolina’s state tree is the palmetto tree, the state flower is the yellow jasmine, and the state gemstone is the amethyst!

South Carolina is home to many things; like the first game of golf, sweet tea, and barbeque. In 1739 the first shipment of golf clubs arrived in Charleston from Scotland and the first game of golf played on an US course took place at the first golf club, the South Carolina Golf Club. Myrtle Beach is also known as the mini-golf capital of the world, being home to over 50 mini-golf courses! Not only is South Carolina home to golf, but the Lowcountry is attributed as the birthplace of barbeque!

While these facts only make up a small part of South Carolina’s history, you can now use this knowledge to go out and celebrate the Palmetto State and everything it has to offer!
