The Folly Beach Pier, an iconic structure in Folly Beach, South Carolina, has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. The original pier, built in the 1930s, was a simple wooden structure designed to attract tourists and locals for fishing or strolls over the Atlantic Ocean. Over the decades, it became a popular gathering spot known for its beautiful ocean views and vibrant community events.

In the 1950s, the pier underwent significant renovations to enhance its durability and appeal. These improvements included the addition of a pavilion, which quickly became a hub for social activities, including dances, concerts, and various public celebrations. However, the pier faced numerous challenges, including several destructive hurricanes. Hurricane Hugo in 1989 caused extreme damage, leading to major repairs and rebuilding efforts. The pier has recently undergone further renovations to ensure its safety and longevity. The most extensive renovation was a complete rebuild by Cape Romain Contractors. They modified the “top-down” manner: the deck behind the restaurant and gift shop was constructed first, and then demolition and construction began at the diamond head end, working back towards the shore. Construction work started in October 2020, and the pier fully reopened to the public on December 26, 2022.
