Folly, Your History Is Showing!

Hurricanes, as many coastal residents know, result in a plethora of scattered debris through the beaches, streets, and yards throughout the Lowcountry. With the elaborate history that Charleston is known for, it is inevitable that the waves and winds from storms uncover more than just debris from time to time, which is exactly what happened on Folly Beach after Hurricane Dorian.

A Summerville couple exploring Folly was surprised to have discovered two cannonballs that date back to the Civil War in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian. The artifacts were found in the area of the old Coast Guard Base at the east end of the beach. After realizing that they were not normal rocks, but instead round cannonballs.

The Civil War artifacts found by the couple are not the first ornaments of history to be found on Folly Beach; a pile of 16 corroded ordinances was uncovered in 2016 as a result of Hurricane Matthew in the same spot. This is no surprise due to all the elaborate history of Civil War battles and pirates for which Charleston is known.

The couple soon contacted authorities; the military confirmed that the two artifacts were, in fact, Civil War cannonballs. The artifacts were found on the shore across from the Morris Island Lighthouse. While it took authorities about six hours to clear the area, it didn’t stop beachgoers from having fun in the Folly sun. What’s better than a day at the beach with a history lesson.
